Electives
Major courses are defined as compulsory courses in the student’s main field of study.
Required ancillary courses are compulsory courses in related are relevant fields.
Electives are non-compulsory courses within or outside the student’s department.
General studies courses are compulsory courses outside the student’s main field of study designed to give him/her the basic principles of all major fields of knowledge as they exist in inter-relationship.
General Studies Programme
In order to qualify for the award of degree/diploma/certificate of the University, all students are required to register and obtain a passing grade in the General studies courses as follows:
1. GSP 101 and 102 are compulsory for all degree and diploma students.
2. Students are admitted by University Matriculation Examination (UME) are required to take six out of the eight GSP courses.
i. Students admitted into the Faculties of Business Administration and the Social Sciences may drop GSP 201 and 202 (Social Sciences)
ii. Students admitted into the faculties of Arts and Law may drop GSP 207 and 208 (Humanities)
iii. Students admitted into the Faculties of Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, Biological Sciences, Engineering, Health Sciences and Technology, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Physical Sciences may drop GSP 105 and 106 (Natural Science).
iv. Students admitted into the Faculty of Education may drop any of the GSP courses as may be recommended by the Faculty Board of Education.
3. All Direct Entry students must take four GSP courses which must include GSP 101 and 102 (The Use of English).
i. Students who obtain their first degree in the University of Nigeria may not require take GSP 101 and 102 and/ or GSP 207 and 208 (Humanities).
4. All students must take a minimum of two Computer Science courses as a compulsory requirement for graduation, in accordance with NUC prescription.
Duration of Academic Programmes
In UNN and many other Nigerian Universities, for each normal degree/diploma/certificate programme an extension of not more than 50% (to the nearest whole number) of the normal period shall not not allowed for the completion of the programme. What this means is that if a student could not graduate at the normal time he/she suppose to, the University will give such student an extra year(s) to complete whatever be the problem (Normal due to failed courses to be passed) that is holding such student within that extra year. The maximum period allowed for the various programmes is as illustrated below:

A student who is unable to complete the programme with the maximum extended period shall be required to withdraw from the university permanently.
