What is a Combined Honours Degree?
A Combined Honours degree offers you the opportunity to pursue a bachelor's degree programme that combines the study of two different subjects.Combined Degree Programme is a kind of programme run by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka UNN that allow students admitted into the programme to combined two courses/departments/subjects and graduate with double honours (not two certificates but two in one).
Each Combined Programme offers courses in two subject areas as well as relevant required ancillary courses from other disciplines and the school of General studies.
Some departments from the Faculty of Biological Sciences and Social Sciences also participate in some of these programmed, that is a student in Physical Sciences can combined a course in the Social Science or Biological Sciences. The programme has no physical building in the University. Each Faculty in the University Administers the Combined Programme under them.
The example I will be given here will be based on the Faculty of Physical Sciences. The examples may be applicable to other faculties like Arts (Combined Arts), Biological Sciences (Combined Biological Sciences) and Social Sciences (Combined Social Sciences) of the University.
As of the date of this post, the Currently Available Combinations in the Faculty of Physical Sciences are as follows:
The Department of Combined Physical Science:
1. Chemistry and Physics
2. Chemistry and Microbiology
3. Computer Science and Mathematics
4. Computer Science and Physics
5. Computer Science and Statistics
6. Geology and Physics
7. Mathematics and Economics
8. Mathematics and Physics
9. Mathematics and Statistics
10. Statistics and Economics
To see the list of courses (including there outlines/contents from any to any year) you are required to offer for all semesters then you must read the post: Academic Programmes and Course Outline in UNN
To access the list of other available combinations in the Faculties of Arts, Biological Sciences and Social Sciences click here.
Note:
The "and" in each of the combinations listed above are normally replaced with forward slash '/', e.g. Chemistry/Physics instead of Chemistry and Physics.
In the case of Computer Science combine, the science is normally omitted and the "and", replaced with foreword slash '/', e.g. Computer/Physics instead of Computer Science and Physics.
Though the Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences is the Head of the Department of Combined Physical Sciences (CPS), however the base department, which shall be within the faculty will co-ordinate the students’ academic programme and provide general and academic counselling to the student. Therefore the head who attends to the students need will be the head of the student base department.
The department that comes first in any of the available combinations is the student’s base department and that is where the student is majoring.
Using Computer/Physics as an example.
If you are in Computer/Physics, then your base department is Computer Science, therefore your major is Computer Science. This makes your department to be Computer Science and programme type to be B.Sc Combined Computer/Physics.
Within the base departments like Computer Science, each of the combination is treated as separate department. And their class lists are always separated on a different sheet of papers according to the combinations.
Each of the Combinations has a class representative aside the general class representative for the department of Combined Physical Sciences (CPS).
When filling form like class attendance, under the department column, students are meant to indicate their combinations (e.g.: (Computer/Physics) instead of Combined Physical Sciences (CPS).
However, in the School of General Studies Programme (GSP), when writing your particulars, due indicate your main department; CPS; unless if the combination is required or requested.
The best practice:
The best practice is as follow: In any activities at all, it is more better that you indicate your combination as well as your main department. e.g.: Computer/Physics (CPS) or CPS (Computer/Physics). It can also be written in abrieviation, thus, Comp/Phy (CPS).

The benefits/objectives of combining:
The degree, for which honours may be awarded on the same basis as for degree taken in single subjects, provides in general; the ideal training for candidates who proceed to postgraduate studies and research or professional careers in any inter-disciplinary field of pure and applied science.
For instance, the degree in Chemistry/Physics or Chemistry/Mathematics would be ideal for students looking forward to a research career in molecular physics, theoretical chemistry or chemical spectroscope.
The degree in Geology/Physics would provide an excellent background for a career in pure and applied geophysics and petroleum geology.
A degree in combining Computer Science with Mathematics, Physics or Statistics enables the student to apply the modern and powerful tool of the computer to his/her specific area of study.
More information concerning each of the combination will be provided later on this site, however leave a comment if you have anything (question(s) or contributions) in mind.
